| Heavy Metal | |
| „If a DVD player is heavier than a middle-class receiver, features a high-quality remote control and has a video input it is obvious that this player is pretty special. Even the loader’s performance is impressive: after the front panel has been lowered, the drive comes out in a very smooth fashion – just like a diva. It is possible to connect the satellite receiver with the player via the S-video input, which means that the impressive video technology is not only noticeable when watching DVDs but also when watching television. When it comes to the quality of the picture, the player is pretty equal to its tall receiver brother, and even at the steep price of 4,500 Euro such quality is not a matter of course. So it is lucky that Onkyo’s engineers kept up their attention to detail when they designed the remote control. Even though it is not exactly handy, the huge “chocolate bar” is easy to handle and can be operated in the dark without problems. Thanks to its background illumination and clear arrangement of the keys it is almost impossible to make a typing error. The Onkyo even comes with all necessary cables, which are by no means cheap free-bees but are definitely useful. The CD playback is full and mature. The sound picture is a good compromise between precise details and dimensional illusion. High resolution data carriers such as SACD or DVD audio are definitely not neglected as it seems that the Onkyo celebrates every single byte. The player does not sound like a cold digital technology system, but it sounds pleasant and honest. The overall quality of the picture is almost as good as the quality of the sound. One of the Onkyo’s fortes is its ability to eliminate small differences and to play mediocre recordings in a way that is not harmful to the eyes. The picture does not lose any of its naturalness even when played via HDMI with an activated Scaler. It even emanates the flair of a good film role. Furthermore the drive and navigation are pretty slick, and its correction mode can even get rid of scratches on CDs. | |

| „The Onkyo’s front panel with its illuminated controls looks extremely posh. Another advantage to its Denon competitor is its remote control, which is made of the finest aluminium and features sophisticated keys. The remote control certainly suits the high quality high end device. The simpler and more cheaply looking remote control of the Denon cannot even begin to keep up with it. With its remote, its easy-to-use menu and its clear display, the Onkyo might even win the “operating” test….” | |

| Great Ambitions | |
| “This player makes a good impression immediately after taking it out of its box. Its design is definitely a winner. The massive aluminium front is concave and there are no designer frills, however, it has more than an every-day façade. The eject key operates the drive by the slightest touch, which then pushes the loader out smoothly but quickly.” | |

DTS Digital Surround |
| Devices carrying this logo handle DTS 5.1-channel decoding. | DTS Digital Surround is the standard for providing 5.1 channels of discrete digital audio in consumer electronics products and software content. |
Dolby Digital |
| This premiere surround sound format delivers realistic digital audio via 5.1 discrete channels. The three front channels (Left/Center/Right) deliver crisp, clean dialogue and accurate placement of on-screen sounds, while twin surround channels (Left Surround/Right Surround) wrap around the audience and immerse them in the action. The LFE (Low-Frequency Effects) channel delivers real impact for explosions and other effects that can, literally, be felt as well as heard. | |

HDMI™ (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) |
The latest in digital interface technology is here and it goes by the name of HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface). This high-bandwidth interface supports not only remarkable amounts of uncompressed digital video but audio as well. Up to 5 Gbps of data, more than twice what’s needed for a high-definition movie with surround sound, can be handled with room for future requirements. |
All this data is kept in the digital domain as there are no D/A or A/D conversions needed to ensure the highest sound and video quality available. Unparalleled amounts of compressed or uncompressed digital audio and video—up to 5 Gbps of data—can be handled with just one high-speed cable. |
i.LINK™ Digital Audio Interface (a.k.a. IEEE1394) |
The reduction of up to six analogue cables to one single digital cable capable of carrying multi-channel audio is here. i.LINK (a.k.a. IEEE1394) provides the high-bandwidth, high-resolution signal transfer of audio that multi-channel formats like DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD have been waiting for. Even better, content stays in the pure digital realm as there are no unnecessary D/A or A/D conversions performed. Experience the pure digital multi-channel music experience you’ve been waiting for. |
Oplus® FlexScale™ Video Scaling Capability |
While HD-DVD with a native resolution of over NTSC 480p or PAL 576p is still on the drawing board, you can experience HD level 720p and 1080i via FlexScale™ video scaling capability from Oplus®. Built in to the DV-SP1000E, and thus eliminating the need for costly external scalers, FlexScale™ takes NTSC 480i or PAL 576i DVDs beyond normal progressive scan players and into the HD domain by enabling 720p or 1080i output through the HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) out on the rear. |
Super Audio CD -- Precision Clarity |
| Super Audio CD gives you the next step in the evolution of pristine sound. All channels provide for up to 100 kHz frequency response and a sampling rate of 2.822 MHz—that’s 64 times that of a regular CD! A multichannel SACD disc can provide you with up to 6 channels of high-resolution audio in addition to a regular CD layer for playback on any existing CD player. | |
DVD-Audio -- Unprecedented Fidelity |
| DVD-Audio’s dataloss-free reproduction of 192 kHz/24-bit 2-channel stereo or 96 kHz/24-bit 6-channel surround sound recreates music with such detail and clarity, it sounds as if every recording is being played live in your home. DVD-Audio can store 1,100 times more information per second than a CD. And with a super-high frequency rate of 192,000 samples per second -- 4.3 times greater than an audio CD -- you get 256 times the resolution, a frequency response up to 96 kHz, and an extraordinary dynamic range of up to 144 dB -- which translates into a musical experience that goes beyond just listening! | |
MP3 |
| MP3s are digital audio files that have been compressed, yet which still maintain the sound quality of the original. Before there were MP3s, digital audio files took hours to download. But on a 56K modem, most MP3s can download in just a few minutes. MP3s are widely recognized as the most popular format for storing and listening to music on the World Wide Web. Listening to MP3s is easy. You just need to download a player, a software application that lets you hear music on your computer. MP3 is short for MPEG Audio Layer 3. MPEG refers to the Moving Pictures Experts Group, an organization that sets international standards for digital formats for audio and video. The file-shrinking technology itself was developed by the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany. | |
JPEG Picture CD Capability |
| Insert a disc containing picture files into a compatible Onkyo DVD player and relive the memories of your last vacation, birthday or any time immortalized on digital film. These players are compatible with FUJICOLOR® CDs, Kodak® Picture CDs, and CD-R/RWs encoded with JPEG picture files, so you can bring those timeless moments to life on your viewing screen. Viewing these pictures is simple with the menu mode, which lists the pictures on the disc for fast and easy selection. | |
192 kHz/24-Bit Audio DACs |
Performing at a full 192 kHz/24-bit level of resolution, these state-of-the-art digital-to-analog converters deliver audio performance that is second to none. They boast a higher dynamic range than standard D/A converters, and are virtually resistant to clock jitter -- which means you’ll enjoy the best performance possible from DVD-Audio discs and Super Audio CDs and cleaner sound from your regular DVDs and CDs. |
Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry (VLSC) |
Conventional D/A conversion methods reduce digital pulse noise at the conversion stage but can’t remove it completely. Previously only found on Onkyo’s high-end components, VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry)employs a unique D/A conversion circuit to overcome this problem. Data is converted between sampling points and these points are joined with analogue vectors in real-time to produce a smooth output wave form. The result - a virtually noiseless, smooth analogue signal based on the digital source. |
Exclusive Dual Direct Digital Path |
Unlike other DVD players that use inexpensive PC-board copper traces to transfer the digital audio signal, the DV-SP1000E employs dual high-purity, heavy-gauge, shielded cables to directly output digital or PCM bitstreams straight from the disc to the back panel. This protects the audio signal against potential noise from nearby microprocessors and power supplies. So if you use the optical or coaxial digital output to send multi-channel Dolby® Digital, DTS® and more to your compatible receiver, you’re starting off with the cleanest possible signal. |
Analog Devices® 216 MHz/14-Bit NSV™ Video DAC |
A crucial factor in achieving clear, pristine digital video playback is the video D/A converter in your DVD player. The state-of-the-art 216 MHz/14-bit video DAC from Analog Devices featured in the DV-SP1000E gives you the finest artifact-free picture available. Features such as 4x oversampling and Noise Shaped Video (NSV®) dramatically reduce noise interference to the video signal, so you can enjoy even the most subtle of nuances in your favorite movies. |
PAL/NTSC Veridic Progressive Scan |
| Most DVDs are “progressive” -- meaning they produce video in complete frames. But to be compatible with all TVs, the DVD signal must be interlaced -- a method where the picture is split into two fields and then blurred together to look like one. Progressive Scan, however, retrieves the original progressive signal, and on such compatible displays as HDTV, Plasma or digital TV and high-end projectors, “paints” all the visible lines on the screen in a single pass -- so you’ll enjoy a scan-line-free image, with spectacularly clear color, no motion artifacts, and details so sharp they seem as if they’re etched onto the screen. | |
