DV-SP504E

Universal DVD/CD Player

On the back of its award-winning predecessors, the DV-SP504E universal DVD/CD player stands out as a versatile player well-positioned for the emergence of high-definition entertainment. It’s the inclusion of the HDMI interface that makes the DV-SP504E a superb choice for delivering movies, high-resolution music, and more recent formats like HD JPEG (for megapixel images with enhanced resolution). Onkyo technology comes into play with Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry (VLSC) and Direct Digital Path to protect audio signals from the single most destructive elements to quality movies and music—pulse noise and noise emanating from a player’s internal components.

DTS Digital Surround
Devices carrying this logo handle DTS 5.1-channel decoding.
DTS Digital Surround is the standard for providing 5.1 channels of discrete digital audio in consumer electronics products and software content.

Dolby Digital
This premiere surround sound format delivers realistic digital audio via 5.1 discrete channels. The three front channels (Left/Center/Right) deliver crisp, clean dialogue and accurate placement of on-screen sounds, while twin surround channels (Left Surround/Right Surround) wrap around the audience and immerse them in the action. The LFE (Low-Frequency Effects) channel delivers real impact for explosions and other effects that can, literally, be felt as well as heard.

HDMI™ (High-Definition Multimedia Interface)
The latest in digital interface technology is here and it goes by the name of HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface). This high-bandwidth interface supports not only remarkable amounts of uncompressed digital video but audio as well. Up to 5 Gbps of data, more than twice what’s needed for a high-definition movie with surround sound, can be handled with room for future requirements.
All this data is kept in the digital domain as there are no D/A or A/D conversions needed to ensure the highest sound and video quality available. Unparalleled amounts of compressed or uncompressed digital audio and video—up to 5 Gbps of data—can be handled with just one high-speed cable.

Super Audio CD -- Precision Clarity
Super Audio CD gives you the next step in the evolution of pristine sound. All channels provide for up to 100 kHz frequency response and a sampling rate of 2.822 MHz—that’s 64 times that of a regular CD! A multichannel SACD disc can provide you with up to 6 channels of high-resolution audio in addition to a regular CD layer for playback on any existing CD player.

DVD-Audio -- Unprecedented Fidelity
DVD-Audio’s dataloss-free reproduction of 192 kHz/24-bit 2-channel stereo or 96 kHz/24-bit 6-channel surround sound recreates music with such detail and clarity, it sounds as if every recording is being played live in your home. DVD-Audio can store 1,100 times more information per second than a CD. And with a super-high frequency rate of 192,000 samples per second -- 4.3 times greater than an audio CD -- you get 256 times the resolution, a frequency response up to 96 kHz, and an extraordinary dynamic range of up to 144 dB -- which translates into a musical experience that goes beyond just listening!

MP3
MP3s are digital audio files that have been compressed, yet which still maintain the sound quality of the original. Before there were MP3s, digital audio files took hours to download. But on a 56K modem, most MP3s can download in just a few minutes. MP3s are widely recognized as the most popular format for storing and listening to music on the World Wide Web. Listening to MP3s is easy. You just need to download a player, a software application that lets you hear music on your computer. MP3 is short for MPEG Audio Layer 3. MPEG refers to the Moving Pictures Experts Group, an organization that sets international standards for digital formats for audio and video. The file-shrinking technology itself was developed by the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany.

Windows Media Audio (WMA)
Windows Media Audio (WMA) has been around for a couple of years, and its integration into the new Windows XP operating system is really increasing its popularity. Compared to MP3, it compresses songs into about half the file size, so you can burn about twice as many songs -around 20 hours’ worth - onto one CD. Despite the higher compression, the sound quality is a bit better vs. MP3. Also, transferability of files from computer to computer is easier.

DivX®
DivX® is video’s equivalent of MP3 - a video compression technology (codec) that compresses video down to a size where it is able to sent via the internet without any significant deterioration in quality. It has the ability to compress the contents of a DVD to only 10% of its size, which is then possible to store on a standard CD. DivX® certified products, like a DVD player, enable the big-screen playback of contents created, manipulated and downloaded on computers.

JPEG Picture CD Capability
Insert a disc containing picture files into a compatible Onkyo DVD player and relive the memories of your last vacation, birthday or any time immortalized on digital film. These players are compatible with FUJICOLOR® CDs, Kodak® Picture CDs, and CD-R/RWs encoded with JPEG picture files, so you can bring those timeless moments to life on your viewing screen. Viewing these pictures is simple with the menu mode, which lists the pictures on the disc for fast and easy selection.

192 kHz/24-Bit Audio DACs
Performing at a full 192 kHz/24-bit level of resolution, these state-of-the-art digital-to-analog converters deliver audio performance that is second to none. They boast a higher dynamic range than standard D/A converters, and are virtually resistant to clock jitter -- which means you’ll enjoy the best performance possible from DVD-Audio discs and Super Audio CDs and cleaner sound from your regular DVDs and CDs.

Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry (VLSC)
Conventional D/A conversion methods reduce digital pulse noise at the conversion stage but can’t remove it completely. Previously only found on Onkyo’s high-end components, VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry)employs a unique D/A conversion circuit to overcome this problem. Data is converted between sampling points and these points are joined with analogue vectors in real-time to produce a smooth output wave form. The result - a virtually noiseless, smooth analogue signal based on the digital source.

Exclusive Direct Digital Path
Unlike other DVD players that use inexpensive PC-board copper traces to transfer the digital audio signal, Onkyo DVD players employ a high-purity, heavy-gauge, shielded cable to directly output the 96 kHz/24-bit digital bitstream straight from the disc to the back panel. This protects the audio signal against potential noise from nearby microprocessors and power supplies. So if you use the optical or coaxial digital output to send multichannel Dolby® Digital and DTS® to your compatible receiver, you’re starting off with the cleanest possible signal.

Progressive Scan
Most DVDs are “progressive”—meaning they produce video in complete frames. But to be compatible with all TVs, the DVD signal must be interlaced – a method where the picture is split into two fields and then blurred together to look like one. Progressive scan, however, retrieves the original progressive signal, and on such compatible displays as HDTV, digital TV and high-end projectors, "paints” all the visible lines on the screen in a single pass -
so you’ll enjoy a scan-line-free image, with spectacularly clear color, no motion artifacts, and details so sharp they seem as if they’re etched onto the screen.

CD Audio
Based upon Red Book specifications, CD-Digital Audio is able to hold audio data at a sampling rate of 44.1 KHz and a sample size of 16 bits, to produce high quality stereo sound.
