The DVD receiver at the heart of this system includes a host of technologies normally only found in Onkyo’s high-quality separate components, along with a range of useful features such as a 1080p-upscaling DVD player, a built-in iPod dock, USB connectivity, and an FM tuner.

Not only is the CS-V645 able to deliver movies in genuinely cinematic fashion, it also manages to sound highly musical with standard two-channel sources. In this product category, that is a rare talent.

Offering 2 x 40 W of power output from its digital amplifier, this system packs an impressive amount of functionality into its compact case (available in silver or black). The DVD player achieves optimal picture quality from DVDs by upscaling them to pristine 1080p resolution for output to a compatible display. Along with a single-cable HDMI out, the unit includes a component video output.

The CS-V645 incorporates a built-in dock on its top panel, which automatically recharges an inserted iPod as long as the system is connected to the mains power. Video content on iPod can be routed to a connected display at the original resolution via the composite or component video outputs.

The system also features a front-panel USB port, which allows users to play back music stored on flash drives or portable audio players.

On top of standard CDs, the CS-V645 handles MP3- and WMA-encoded CDs, and offers four MP3 playback modes: Normal, Random, Memory, and Folder. To ensure that users can access the vast quantity of freely available broadcast content, the receiver also includes a 20-preset FM tuner. At the press of a button, a multi-mode timer/clock can be programmed to wake the user to a chosen radio station.

Other notable features on the CS-V645 include a subwoofer pre-out; video output for iPod; a battery-free memory back-up system that can restore settings after a power cut; bass and treble controls; and banana plug-compatible loudspeaker sockets.

Rounding out the package are a pair of D-045 two-way, bass-reflex loudspeakers. Finished in smart black, each of these speakers incorporates a new crossover, a 2.5 cm soft-dome tweeter, and a 12 cm mid/bass drive unit made from a pure cotton and aramid weave (Onkyo Micro Fiber). The mid/bass drivers also feature a vibration-reducing V-Line Edge around the circumference, which aids in producing a convincingly open-sounding mid-range.

Unobtrusive yet extremely versatile, the CS-V645 mini DVD receiver system is an affordable and multi-talented music-and-movie solution.

CS-V645 (Comprising DR-645 DVD/CD receiver and D-045 speakers)

Available configurations: Silver receiver with black speakers (SB); black receiver with black speakers (BB); or silver receiver with white speakers (SW).
