Measuring 202 mm deep and 193 mm high, the mains-powered CBX-500 presents a sleek, minimalist profile. Whether placed in a lounge, bedroom, or office, it delivers high-quality audio in a discreet package.
Onkyo’s engineers drew on decades of experience to create a premium iPod-compatible system with the extra playback conveniences desired by consumers. On the CBX-500, iPod connectivity is complemented by an AM/FM tuner, as well as CD and USB playback.
The retractable iPod tray can be accessed by tapping the small rectangle at the base of the front panel. When not in use, the tray hides out of sight, preserving the system’s streamlined appearance.
To ensure optimal audio performance from a connected iPod, Onkyo incorporated a proprietary direct digital connection. With a design based on the technology inside Onkyo’s award-winning ND-S1 Digital Media Transport, this pure-digital interface works to maximize the sound quality of compressed audio files.
CDs are inserted into a dust-proof vertical slot located on the unit’s aluminum alloy top panel. Meanwhile, the USB port is located on a side panel for easy and discreet access. The USB input expands the user’s range of music sources by enabling playback of audio files stored on flash drives and portable audio players. (Note that CBX-500 models sold in some regions do not feature a USB port.)
Users who prefer to listen to a radio DJ's choice of music can take advantage of the built-in AM/FM tuner, which offers up to 40 station presets. A 4-mode timer allows the system to function as an alarm clock.
Despite the size constraints of its product category, the CBX-500 achieves a superior level of audio reproduction. Key to its performance are the structurally separate high-power amplifier circuits and the discrete speaker construction. The two full-range 8 cm OMF (Onkyo Micro Fiber) speakers are housed in fully separated cabinets, to keep left- and right-channel audio output distinct and clear.
Adjustable bass and treble controls allow users to fine-tune the sound to match their preferences. For larger adjustments to low-end frequencies, the CBX-500 provides a three-step Super Bass control. In conjunction with Onkyo’s Aero Acoustic Drive, this generates an especially solid and assured bass response. Users who own a flat-screen TV with poor audio output can connect the CBX-500 via the auxiliary input for an immediate improvement in sound quality.
With a clearly labelled and user-friendly remote control to complete the package, the CBX-500 makes a compelling case for itself in a crowded market. Its style, sound quality, and versatility give it a unique appeal.
