Due to its insistent sound and impressive volume in the bass regions the TX-SR503E takes its listeners by surprise. Its pleasantly clear and unobtrusive characteristics also contribute to the overall picture of this system. However, our test candidate did not only excel at playing movie sound tracks it also impressed with its multi-channel performance, which means it is a real all-rounder. The surround sound blends in with any transmission method as it is broad and precise at the same time. Here the Onkyo has also achieved high scores.
With this A/V receiver Onkyo has proved that anything is possible, even for 400 Euro. The fact that it is able to keep its levels well, it can perform impressively even in a 30m² testing room and it features a clear treble as well as a powerful bass makes this machine extremely competitive."

A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing

It is the perfect blender: Given its small size nobody would expect to find such a power house behind the pretty façade of Onkyo’s half-size A-933 amplifier. One of its highlights is its impressive output, which runs at a highly respectable 184 Watts per channel and hardly needs any cooling. The Japanese engineers preferred to use the saved space for a generous power supply providing the Separate Collection 275 with excellent sound, which can definitely compete with any other full-size system in this price range. However, it is not only its powerful and voluminous timbre that silhouettes these three beauties from many other systems; its perfectly manufactured metal case and fine details, such as its motor driven volume control, are also a real advantage.

"This product features a simple front panel, which hides the less frequently used controls, such as a “super bass” control. However, if the impact of the bass is not strong enough, the pre-amplifier has a subwoofer output that actively boosts the bass. Via its “main in” the Onkyo’s A-933 can also act as an output stage for external pre-amplifiers or level-controlled CD-players.
When it comes to its technology the Onkyo is also of great interest. Its output stage belongs to the family of switching amplifiers, which are often referred to as “digital amplifiers”. Compared to the analogue amplifiers they are more efficient, which means they loose a lot less energy in heating. For this reason they are often smaller and don’t need a huge cooling system. And even though this system is tiny, it can surely not be described as frail. The testing laboratory has determined an output of 2 x 177 Watts into a 4 Ohm load – which is more than the brochure promised.
As opposed to many other digital amplifiers this Onkyo does not get its primary energy from the switching power supply, which would have saved a lot of space. For this reason its interior remains pretty crowded as the conventional power supply with two toroidal transformers needs every millimeter inside its sheet-steel case.
Summary: A round but still impulsive sounding mid-size switching amplifier.

...but his look is better that the compared Denon AVC-A1XV: his modular construction permit a continuous upgrade. Onkyo don’t know the obsolescence. In terms of performances his sounds are the best that you can listen with an integrated receiver: very high fidelity on 7.1 channel. The machine has a lot of power but it’s very well balanced. It gives you very high performances in both stereo and multichannel. The Asahi-Kasei AKM AK5384 DAC are one of the best DAC on the market. Their built-in delta-sigma integrated modulators (4 for each of the two chips) have the differential inputs insensible to the noises and for this they have an excellent S/N ratio of 107 dB! With the Onkyo TX-NR5000E you enter the audiophile world; it rebuild really splendid sounds that seems sculptured by a Canova. His control is more typical of a tube amplifier then a solid state one: this is the effect of the WRAT technology. The TX-NR5000E works perfectly with every genre. The listener have the impression to be aboard of a jet plane; power under control. It’s also simple to use; it’s an amplifier to the listener service, and not viceversa.”
